Christmas Eve Traditions 2010

What would Christmas be without our Christmas Eve traditions....boring. One of my traditions is decorating Christmas cookies and getting them ready for Santa. This year we all got involved to include Pat and Sean. I think they were doing it more for a competition, but nonetheless they did it. The boys and I made the dough, cut the cookies and baked them the day before so they were nice and ready to decorate the next day. The good part is that it gave me a rest since the whole baking the cookies takes awhile and since I was recovering from knee surgery I couldn't' stand for long periods of time.

Austin did really well this year by keeping the shakers out of the icing on his cookies. He likes a lot of sprinkles and decorations on his where Colby is a little more simple. Just a few work for him.
As, always we have fun no matter what we are doing and this year was no different.
Sean spent about 20 minutes on his one cookie and the boys did about 5 during the same amount of time. I think he was trying to beat his Dad.

Our final products. I would say Pat probably won but only because I was helping the boys more than doing my own.
Colby's for Santa is the upside down Gingerbread man at the bottom but then he changed to the striped Candy Can in the middle with the swirl. Sean's is the white snowman on the bottom right that took him 20 minutes. And Austin's is the skinny snowman at the top center with green eyes and buttons!
Then we moved on to another tradition. We all went to Church for our Christmas Eve service which is always very special. There was a full church but we were able to get seats close to the front so the boys could see as well. After church we swung through Sonic for our favorite sodas we headed home and put our new PJ's on.
Pat always reads the story from the Bible and Twas the Night Before Christmas. It was amazing how much the boys learned this year. They would tell everyone that it Jesus' birthday and that he was born in a manger with animals around. They would say that his mom is Mary and his dad is Joesph. It makes me proud to see them learn the real meaning of holidays and yet still enjoy the fun side as well.
As a nice surprise and since they were so good listening on Christmas Eve at home and Church they were allowed to open on Christmas gift and they both chose the gifts from Matthew and Lauren. Personally I loved their gifts more than they did....well at least the blankets.
The funny part is I have a gray Razorback blanket that Ann-Marie gave me before the boys were born. Colby knows that is my favorite blanket and any time I sit down on the couch he goes and gets it for me. Well his blanket is black and I asked him one day if I could use the black blanket and his response was "no Mom, you have your own so you need to use the gray one and leave my alone".

The cookies and milk are ready and everyone in their new PJs and ready for a good nights sleep and a very busy day on Christmas Day.
I love my family and the time we got to share together over the holidays. I loved having my Dad fly out to Utah for a few days because we don't get to see him enough. Stay tuned for Christmas Day activities.

School Christmas Program

The boys had their annual Sunrise Montessori School Christmas Program and they were dressed as shepherds. They sang a few songs and enjoyed dinner at the school. Of course the best part was Santa showing up. He was the same Santa that visited last year and that to hide from the boys in the parking lot so they wouldn't' see him getting into his car and driving away.
Colby was telling Santa he wanted a pillow pet and camera.

I am not sure where they are learning to smile but gotta love it because they both smile this way all the time now.
Singing their song before Austin knocked off the sheep's hat.
The boys had a great time and I am very thankful Pat was here to enjoy it this year.

Trip to St Louis

The Army has come up with a program for all deployed Soldiers called the Yellow Ribbon. There are 7 events some are prior to deployment and some are after deployment. These conferences are for the Soldiers and their families and friends to help in the transition of having a Soldier home again. Pat and I have to attend 3 of these and we were fortunate our first one was in St Louis, MO. We packed up the boys and flew for a weekend and the best part is my family drove to St Louis for the weekend.

Dad, Ann-Marie, Nate, Matthew and Lauren all stayed the weekend with us in St Louis and while Pat and I were in classes, Colby and Austin got to spend the day with their cousins. We we made it to the zoo which was really neat and the boys went to the city museum which is apparently so much fun. On our last day we headed to the Arch.
The boys were amazed at how much they could see from the top of the arch and how high up we were. It had been a long time since I had been to St Louis but since Nate is from that area his parents also got to have dinner with all of us. It's always nice to be sent to an area where we have family since we don't get to visit very often.

Facebook discussion

Pat and I were sitting on the couch one evening and the boys were playing at the coffee table. Here is what we heard.

Austin: Colby do you want to be my friend?
Colby: Yes, I do
Austin: Well do you have facebook?
Colby:Yes, I think so
Austin: Well you can only be my friend if you have facebook.
Colby: Then yes, I have facebook
Austin: Ok then you can be my friend.

I got tickled and asked Austin what Facebook was...

Austin very serisouly stated: Well ya see, I have a face and I have a book so I have facebook.

Love the way kids think!

Trick or Treat

Watch out, it's the toughest superheroes you've ever seen.
I wasn't allowed to pick costumes this year or I of course would have picked pairs. I just think it's so cute but the boys were not having it. They have a mind of their own and I learning to appreciate it and support it. It's tough seeing them grow up and become so independent, but it also makes me proud of my lil guys. Halloween was a lil let down this year, as it was pouring down rain, hailing and strong winds made for very short trick or treating for our family.

We did manage to catch a short break in the weather and headed out to knock on some doors. After the boys had gotten more than enough candy we stopped by friends' house for some drinks and more candy for the boys.
Colby made it Austin's job to ring the doorbell or knock on the door.
I couldn't believe how much candy they got but more importantly I'm was just happy to see a smile on their face and to have Daddy out with us. Because it was raining so bad, Daddy drove the car and I walked the boys up to the door. We only had one house that scared Colby. It was a half man/half horse and Colby froze in place. He couldn't say anything so Austin did the talking. After the man closed the door, Colby said "well that was the scariest thing I have ever seen". Colby told everyone about the man all night and it just made me smile. I love seeing the world and holidays through the eyes of a child. That is why I cannot wait for Christmas.

Knights at school

Guess what mom, we are going to be knights at school. Oh really when? Tomorrow. Tomorrow!! What a challenge for mom. Of course I set out to make them the cutest, toughest knights in Sunrise Montessori school and I had one night to do it. So with a stop by the dollar store and some creative thinking I set out to work. I even had the boys helping paint their shields. And here are my knights. I didn't get to all of the armor but they were totally happy with their costumes and that made me happy. They could not wait to wear them to school for the big parade and party.
Colby ditched some of his costume and decided to use his helmet for candy.
Austin was very happy to see me a along their parade route.

I have come to the conclusion that I will never have fairies, princesses, queens, or cute girly costumes in my home, therefore I promise Austin and Colby to always ensure they are the coolest and toughest in costume. I love my boys and being a mom of all boys is a challenge at times but I wouldn't change it for the world. I love sticks, rocks, bugs (ok maybe not bugs) trucks and sports and I love my boys. Thank you God for blessing me with 3 amazing sons. I know will never give me more than I can handle, even if it is short notice.

Pumpkin family

How fun it was for Daddy to be with us this year for Halloween. We didn't make it to the annual hayride to get pumpkins due to rain but I did take the kiddos out to pick up pumpkins. Of course everyone in our family gets one. Pat loved how we did them this year because it meant he didn't have to clean out 3 pumpkins. Everyone was suppose to be making scary faces. I think Colby might have been the only one that achieved his. Sean definitely did not. Colby was very proud he did his all by himself this year.
Austin's was very similar to last year but that just means his likes it.
Pat enjoying making his pumpkin double sided. One side was happy pumpkin and the other side was scary pumpkin.
My boys and their pumpkins.

Austin needed a little help and actually let me help him instead of Daddy.
Sean was creating his master piece.
The gang...
Now with Daddy!
I love seeing these smiles because Daddy is home. Last year was just not the same.
